When a compulsive gambler is in recovery, feeling guilty is one of the toughest areas to resolve for some people. When a gambler finally makes the conscious decision to stop gambling, reality sets in for the first time in a long time. When they take finally take stock in themselves they see all the damage they caused. Some people stop right before it’s too late and they have a few assets left. Then the compulsive gambler thinks they’re in control and once again go back to gambling. The next time the destruction is twice as worse. * Feeling guilty about your self destructive behavior

* Feeling guilty you didn’t go to relatives and friends events (birthdays, graduations etc.)

In time people will forgive the compulsive gambler, but can the compulsive gambler forgive them selves?

Friends and family will come around if the compulsive gambler keeps their word from now on. Once the gambler tells you they stop gambling, they must stick to it. If not they will lose credibility. Trust is very important both for the compulsive gambler and for the family and friends. People have to learn to trust compulsive gamblers all over again. In time they will if the compulsive gambler is willing to stop gambling.

Even though a compulsive gambler made numerous mistakes, they can recover and they can move forward. It’s human nature to learn from your mistakes. No one is going to give the compulsive gambler the death penalty for gambling. A lot of gamblers feel this way when their world comes crumbling down.

Cocaine..let it roll off your tongue and ring in your ears for a second. Why do highly addictive substances all sound so.. “cool”. Cocaine and its derivatives, such as crack cocaine, are highly addictive substances.

The user receives almost instant gratification and may feel euphoric, alert, powerful, or even sensual. Cocaine is a highly addictive drug, hence cocaine users will frequently go to extreme lengths in order to get another “hit” or “fix”. Cocaine addicts are not limited to bums or teenagers, people of all statures are liable to become addicted to cocaine – no one is perfect. Cocaine addiction often effects not only the user, but people around the user as well. Friends, family or even jobs may be neglected, lied to and mislead in order to hide or satisfy the addiction. The user may go to extremes and concoct grand schemes in order to get the drug. This is one of the reasons addiction to cocaine or crack cocaine is often considered to be serious.

Signs of cocaine abuse include:

Change in mood, unusual appetite, altered sleep cycles, depression, absence at work and at home, running/sniffly nose, new group of friends and a drop in school grades. Loss of interest in hobbies and other activities are also common signs of cocaine use or other substance abuse.

Withdrawal can include nausea, vomiting, disorientation, dizziness, numbness, cold sweats, fever, diarrhea, restlessness and many other mostly mild symptoms. With proper care and attention withdrawal can be managed without any major concerns.

Cocaine users must be confronted and pointed (but not forced) towards therapy and hopefully rehabilitation. Even after a drug addict has quit using the drug, the cravings and or habits may stick around for a long time. Some suggest that habits take about 7 months to fade entirely when not in use, however many drug addicts report craving their favored drug many years later. Curbing Your Carbohydrate Addiction

Some experts consider carbohydrate craving and addiction as something more of the body than of the mind, meaning biological factors are generally considered to be the main trigger for carb cravings. These cravings are described as a compelling craving, or desire for carbohydrate-rich foods; an escalating, recurring need or drive for starches, snack foods, junk food, or sweets.

What’s the Cure for Hypnosis Addiction?

Hypnosis breaks addictions. In the hands of a loser looking for a cheap thrill, it can certainly form them.

Yeah, it turns out you need to be careful who you let hypnotise you. I hear horror stories all the time. People find random audios on the internet, listen to them, then regret it.

They can’t stop listening to them.

They start questioning their reality and identity. So many of these victims freak out, thinking the audio turned them gay/straight or made them a sex slave or something. It probably didn’t, but the thought of it is enough to make them miserable.

How I Cured My Lip Balm Addiction in 3 Days

For anyone who’s never experienced the lip balm habit, it’s hard to understand. Compared to other addictions, the economy, poverty, hunger, disease and personal tragedies, this problem is a minor inconvenience and it’s almost embarrassing to mention. But for those of us who panic when we can’t find our trusty lip balm and can’t leave home without it, it’s a habit most of would like to break. This is my story of how I cured my lip balm addiction…and it happened by accident and in only three days.

Over forty years ago, I was introduced to Avon Dew Kiss Lip Dew in the innocent looking pink tube by a fellow high school student. I loved it. Not caring for colored lipstick, I was thrilled that this balm gave a natural and healthy looking shine to my lips. Little did I know how long my love for this product would last or how important it would become in my life. It just seemed like a nice item to have handy for cold, windy days in Idaho where I lived. It wasn’t expensive and was easy to get. “Ding-Dong, Avon Calling” meant my neighborhood Avon Lady was delivering my Lip Dew order. As I moved around the U.S. over the years, locating the local Avon distributor was at the top of my to-do list when I reached my new home. If I couldn’t find her right away and ran out of Lip Dew, I’d substitute Chapstick back in the old days, but it was too waxy and dull back then so I was always looking for my next supplier.

How bad was my habit? If I left the house without Lip Dew and had time to go back home to get it, I’d drive home. If making the return trip would take too long, then I’d stop at a store and buy Bonnie Bell, Carmex or Chapstick. Later on, the growing lip balm market gave me more options, such as Burt’s Bees and Neutrogena. Of course, when I was home, I only used Lip Dew. It remained my favorite. When I ordered it, I’d order 10 to 12 at a time and stash them all over the house and office. I’d put a tube in each of the purses I used most frequently to ensure I didn’t leave home without it. I usually had one in a pants or jacket pocket, too, which invariably got missed when I did laundry and left little grease stains all over my clothes. If “ubiquitous” can describe a product, then it described Lip Dew in my life; it was indeed present everywhere. The reason I needed so many tubes handy was because I reapplied it every 15 to 20 minutes throughout the day, and if I woke up in the middle of the night, I’d grab my tube of Lip Dew on the nightstand. This had been a bad habit for decades.

You could debate whether or not the ingredients in lip balm cause an addiction, and thanks to the Internet, researching this topic is easy. Probably the top site is which lists many manufactures and discusses the possibility that they deliberately include ingredients to dry your lips so you crave more lip balm. This site is not only informative but entertaining since it includes humor to help struggling lip balm addicts lighten up about their habit. I wouldn’t say lip balm ingredients are physically addicting like nicotine in cigarettes but there’s no doubt repeating any action often enough results in a psychological habit that’s hard to break. The physical attachment to lip balm may be due to licking your lips which you’re probably not aware you do. Licking wears off the balm so you apply more. Why do you think the manufacturers add flavors? It tastes good so you lick it! You lick it and your lips feel dry, so you apply more lip balm. Result: You use up your supply quicker and have to buy more!

I would still be in the dry-apply cycle if not for a friend who’s an independent distributor for Senegence LipSense and asked me to try this long-lasting lipstick and gloss system. She had never heard of lip balm addiction so she didn’t know what she was asking! I’m not big on makeup and have rarely worn colored lipstick so this wasn’t a purchase I’d normally make. Plus, the few over-the-counter “long-lasting” lipsticks I tried had dried my lips so I needed even more Lip Dew. Truly, if my friend hadn’t persisted, I wouldn’t have bothered but I finally agreed to test this product in a neutral color for a few days. The first day, I thought it was a little heavy, not like any regular lip balm, but since I was very conscious of this new feeling, I was reminded not to lick or chew on my lips. This was undoubtedly what started to break the habit. I reapplied the gloss after eating and a few times during the day, but didn’t feel the need to reapply it several times an hour. The second day, I was still aware of something different on my lips, but I was getting used to the feeling and my lips didn’t feel dry. On the third day, I had the real breakthrough. I realized late that afternoon that I had applied gloss right after lunch and had then forgotten about my lips for hours. Hours! Imagine. In three days, I had gone from applying lip balm every 15 to 20 minutes to not applying anything for hours. That means I could actually leave the house for 2 or 3 hours without carrying “a fix” with me. Only a lip balm addict could understand the sense of freedom I felt!

You don’t need this product to cure your lip balm addiction. I think any of the over-the-counter long-lasting lipsticks or glosses might do the same thing if you stay with them. “Long-lasting” is the key feature to look for. There were three components to my success. One, because I was conscious there was something different on my lips, I became keenly aware each time I started to lick them and I stopped doing that. I had read that lips need exfoliating, so I threw that in, too, and used a light scrub on my lips each night which probably reduced the dry feeling during the day. Three, since the lipstick I was using is long-lasting and the gloss contains Shea butter, my lips didn’t feel bare, dry or unprotected for hours which ended the feeling that I desperately needed to apply some lip product several times an hour.

Did I trade one addiction for another? No. I’ve actually gotten busy and forgotten to use my Lip Sense and Gloss a few days and it was mid-afternoon before I realized it. In fact, I’ve gone entire days without anything on my lips and been comfortable, so I’d say, my habit is successfully broken. While I can go without anything, I prefer the moisturizing and protective benefits of LipSense since I live in an extremely dry climate in Arizona. I’m sure I could have gone cold turkey for a few days to break the lip balm addiction, but the fact is, I wouldn’t even have considered trying that so this was the only solution for me. After having a serious lip balm habit for over forty years, I would never have imagined that I could break it ever, and certainly not in three days. I’m finally free!

Seldom will an internet chat room addict ever get to meet the people he or she is chatting to. It would ruin the facade the addicts are putting up for their chat room colleagues. *Online shopping

Online shopping addiction comes in the form of many kinds. There is the person who is addicted to buying items from the many online shops. Then there is the person who is addicted to auction type buying. Either one could put a person in debt in a matter of seconds. Just one click of the mouse could take money from their credit card and rack up enormous debts. This type of addiction usually starts with small purchases and paying with their credit card. Many small purchases of this kind then add up to many thousands of dollars. The thrill of bidding on an item in an online auction and then overbidding just to win the item (which they may not really want anyway) does cause addiction. These are possibly the most damaging of all computer addictions. These millions of dollar a year businesses make their money by sucking addicts of their money. The thrill of possibly winning by gambling is very real and has never been easier since the onset of online casinos and other forms of online gambling. Serious debts have been incurred by these computer addicts. Some have even lost everything, their family, homes, possessions and even more extreme, their lives. There are organizations that specifically deal with this kind of computer addiction and they have helped many thousands of people get rid of this damaging addiction and have been able to give advice on helping to pull their lives back together again.

By no means is this list of computer addictions complete as there are many other forms of computer addiction. The ones mentioned in this article are, I believe, to be the most prevalent types of computer addiction.

The Addictive Personality Part Two

Much has been written about genetic predisposition and its relationship to addictive personalities. Having an addict in the family does not guarantee that everyone in the family will become addicts. But many believe that hereditary factors can raise a person’s level of vulnerability to substance abuse or other addictions. That may explain why some gamble in moderation and others compulsively-why some can drink for enjoyment and others become alcoholics.

It does seem as if those with the genetic predisposition will engage in some type of excessive behavior but will not necessary choose the same stimuli they have been exposed to. Adult children of alcoholics may never drink but they may become addicted to gambling. Children of drug addicts may exercise excessively or be workaholics.

There is no single gene that determines a person’s susceptibility to addiction. Studies comparing identical and fraternal twins estimate that genetic factors account for 40 to 60 percent of the occurrence of the gene variation.

Researchers have discovered a number of genes that link to addiction through DNA testing. One gene causes dizziness and nausea from smoking and is more present in non-smokers than smokers. Alcoholism is rare in those who have two copies of the ALDH2 gene. Other genes have been linked to narcotic dependency.

Variants in certain genes have been shown to suppress dopamine signals in the brain. Those with these blunted receptors have the need to seek higher levels of stimulation to reach the same level of pleasure as those who don’t have the variants. DNA testing can offer vital clues in battling addiction but the use of it is very controversial. The concern is that some may use this information for discrimination purposes.

It comes down to the nature versus nurture argument. Environment and upbringing are believed to be equally important in shaping the personality. Our life circumstances and emotional experiences may have more influence than our genetic make-up does. Under this theory no matter our chemical make-up, we still have the ability to choose and control our actions.

There are factors that may indicate a higher risk of developing a serious addiction. People who have difficulty thinking about the long term consequences of their actions are more susceptible to developing an addiction. So are those who do everything in excess and/or to extremes, and those who habitually substitute one compulsion for another. For example, stressed out workaholics may come home at the end of the day and start drinking to help them relax. They may use cybersex because they don’t have time for real relationships. They may stress-eat.

Those with addictive personalities are most vulnerable during periods of heightened stress such as adolescence and times of transition. People who suffer from mental illnesses, emotional disorders, and personality disorders are highly prone to addiction as well. Without being aware that they have a condition, they may self-medicate to manage emotions using substances or behaviors to relieve whatever discomfort they may feel.

Nonconformists, non-achievers, and those with deviant personalities are also prime candidates for addiction. Many adult addicts report having been subjected to deprivation or overindulgence in their childhoods. Others report that they were negatively impacted by their parents’ constant, unpredictable fluctuation between over-praise and over-criticism.

Addictions are unmanageable, excessive, and repetitive. The addiction activity begins harmlessly with a pleasurable experience, but over time more and more of the activity is needed to achieve the same effect. People become dependent on the high they get and find it difficult to stop the behavior. If deprived of their fix they will find a substitute. If forced to stop the behavior they will suffer physical or psychological symptoms of withdrawal that compel them to resume the addiction. Over time they lose the ability to cope with life without the addictive stimuli.

People with addictions will deny that what they’re doing is detrimentally affecting them while work, family, and social relationships suffer and their health declines. Their desperation often lead them to take extremes in getting the fix, which ultimately creates financial and legal issues.

Addictions can be classified as hard or soft. Hard addictions, also known as substance addiction, are categorized by the rapid affect they have on many aspects of the person’s behavior as well as the effect they have on everyone around him or her. Abuse of alcohol, barbiturates, and narcotics are usually the source of this type of addiction. This is different than substance abusers who use from time to time. Substance addicts spend every waking moment finding ways to buy and use drugs or alcohol.

With soft addictions the abuser uses activities that are harmless to most people. The consequences of those behaviors are not immediately felt. Cigarette smoking and coffee drinking are two commonly known examples of soft addictions. It is much easier to hide soft addictions and cover up the behaviors that result from them. But soft-addictions have the propensity to lead to more serious addictions down the road.

Gambling is another common example of a soft addiction. Gamblers with addictive personalities go through three stages. In the first phase, also known as the winning phase, the person has control over his or her behavior. The second stage is known as the losing phase. In this phase the person begins gambling alone, gambling large sums of money, and borrowing cash to pay off mounting debt. The third phase is called the desperation phase. In this phase the gambler engages in more risky, sometimes illegal behavior. In desperation he or she may borrow money from non conventional sources. Depression and attempted suicide are common in the third phase of gambling.

Other examples of soft addictions are eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive over-eating. Though there are other factors that contribute to this type of behavior, it can develop into pathological behavior that is very similar to addiction. The anorexic fixates on the goal of losing weight. Once the person begins dieting he or she finds it very hard to stop. Those with bulimia are after the same goal as those who are anorexic, but the mode of operation is different. Instead of limiting their diet they binge on large amounts of food and then purge it before their bodies have the chance to digest it. Compulsive eaters are not concerned with weight loss or weight gain, though the disorder often results in obesity. They have a compulsive urge to eat, whether hungry or not.

Something as beneficial as exercising can become a preoccupation or addiction to those who are predisposed to having one. Running is the most prevalent; runners are known to get a runner’s high and can become dependent on it. This is attributed to mood-enhancing chemicals called endorphins that are released during exercise. An addiction occurs when the exercise activity is used as an escape or a coping mechanism. It’s a problem when it becomes so excessive that the body suffers injury, and when it negatively impacts relationships.

Compulsive buying falls under the category of soft addictions. Those who do it are addicted to the buzz it gives them. It has nothing to do with what they are buying, it is simply their drug. They buy only for the sake of buying without ever intending to use it. Those with this disorder often suffer from other disorders such as depression, mood swings, and anxiety. Buying gives them temporary relief, but after they do it they feel heightened anxiety and intense guilt. One study showed that twenty percent of compulsive buyers suffer from an eating disorder as well.

The two newest additions to the soft-addiction category are Internet abuse and cell phone abuse. They are more prevalent in younger generations, though there is a significant number of older people who develop these addictions as well.

Those who have an Internet addiction, also known as pathological Internet use, find they cannot control their usage of it. They may be drawn to online games, social networking sites, or other online sites, and will spend an excessive amount of time there. The use becomes an addiction when withdrawal symptoms such as mood changes are suffered when they are away from it.

Some people become addicted to cyber relationships. A problem occurs when these relationships are used to avoid face to face, interpersonal interactions. This addiction can lead to social, psychological, and work or school problems.

A recent study shows that those who are addicted to cell phone use display behaviors very similar to those with addictive personalities-low self-esteem, approval seeking, insecurity. Cell phones have become indispensable in our lives, but they can reinforce the tendency of over-attachment for those with addictive personalities.
